Kaitenzushi (shinjuku)
1999-03-09

I've been told that kaitenzushi (rotating sushi) is not generally the best sushi but I personally found almost every kaitenzushi place in Japan to be better than any sushi restaurant I've eaten at in the United States.  I tried several of them.  My favorites are:

1) The kaitenzushi store in Shinjuku outside the south exit.  Exit the station by Tower Records, walk down the stairs and then cross the street and go down the street on the left that cuts away diagonally.  The store is on the first block on the left.  If you aren't paying attention you can pass it as the stores on that street are so busy. At this store all plates are 120 yen and I was never disappointed with the quality.

2) In Kawasaki there is a store in the outdoor covered mall street near the side closest to Yokohama.  I only went there a few times but the thing I liked most was that they seemed to have the most selection.  And not just sushi but soups, fruits, desserts.  Pretty good.

3) Also in JR Kawasaki station at the bottom of the stairs to the right there is a small kaitenzushi place.  They had the best toro sushi, the best kind, I've had at a kaitenzushi store but it was also pretty expensive.  If I remember correctly the toro plate was 500 yen.

More Kaitenzushi [ e ]

My favorite kaitenzushi place is right on Omotesando underneath Chat Noir coffee shop, if I remember correctly...a couple of blocks down from Citibank as you stroll (or hustle) towards Meiji Dori on the Citibank side.

It's not incredibly cheap (130-280? ...more for your Toro), but very fair for the variety and quality.  I've rarely been disappointed.  Part of the chain (Genroku?) with the green background with a stylized purple/blue pinwheel logo.

I'm looking forward to trying your fave in Shinjuku... There's another one on the Nishi side, where all the electronic retailers tempt me to relinquish my wallet, that I haven't tried yet...next to McD's, I think.

I'll have to try that place.  It's only about 5 minutes from where I work.

Two places-- one in Asakusa maybe 3 blocks east of the Cannon main gate entrance, huge dishes of crab legs on the rotating belt... this place was super expensive, though

Absolute best i found was in Shibuya, down the wide paved walking-street that they close off from cars, I mean to the right of the road to Shibuya 109 building, two or three blocks down, around the corner and on the right, before you reach the street that has Tokyu Hands on it.  Cheapest and best best best, and the chefs aren't assh*les to foreigners.

i meant west of the gate in Asakusa-

And if you ever get to Sapporo, there's a kaitenzushi on the 6th floor of the big shopping mall attached to the huge, new JR Sapporo station-- it's a big place and the wait is at least an hour on slow days...

I recommend "Waka Taka" in Ikebukuro.
Take the east exit, cross the street and go one block (to the right of Bic Camera).
Turn left at the first intersection (there's a convenience store-- maybe family mart?) and Waka Taka is a few stores down on your left.

It's 136/plate with good variety.
