Xbox360 in Japan
My project is finally wrapping up so I decided to get an XBox 360 since I finally have some time to play games again. Living in Japan the question comes up do I get a Japan 360, an Asian 360 or a USA 360. Some games are region locked so if I get a USA 360 then I can generally only play USA versions of games. Since I live in Tokyo that means I have to play expensive import prices.

Well, a friend told me his local game store was blowing out their launch day 360s they still had left over for 29700yen. As of the day I bought it that translates to U.S $261 for a brand new un opened Xbox 360 premium pack. That was too good a deal to turn down. If you needed any proof 360 is not doing well in Japan, here it is.

I got it home, it appears to have the Hitachi DVD drive which is supposed to be loud. I haven't purchased a game yet so I haven't been able to hear it going at high-speed yet but it was quiet with a regular DVD-Video so I'll cross my fingers I lucked out and got a quiet 360.

I had quite an issue setting it up though. I have a Japanese XBox Live account but according to my 360 owning friends I really want to be on USA XBox Live for the latest demos and games many of which are not available on Japan XBox Live.

Unfortunately the XBox Live signup forums require me to enter a State and Zipcode for my billing address. Because I live in Japan I changed my mailing addresses on my U.S. credit cards to Japan so there was no way to sign up for a new account. I even called them (India), hoping they could sign me up manually but they just verified that I was S.O.L.

First off, I understand this is not the normal experience because I live outside the U.S. but still, I'd argue Microsoft went out of their way to limit things needlessly. Microsoft is not alone, lots of companies do this kind of stupid stuff but most forward thinking net aware companies realize that people live all over the world and they'll lose sales if they don't allow exceptions.

Anyway after an hour or more of trying, calling customer service, chatting with customer service and even failing to find a U.S. credit card I haven't used in 4 years, I settled on signing up for a free silver account on USA XBox Live and just using a Japanese Live Gold Account. The next issue will be if I cancel my Japanese Live account will I still be able to play any games I bought from XBox Live Arcade.

Pass it on

heat
From working with the dev kits all day I am happy to hear they are going to start to include a new, smaller chip into the 360s. The amount of heat these things produce is incredible!

I won't be buying a retail kit until that happens and some better games come out. Ghost Recon and Oblivion seem to be the choice games at the moment but neither of them warrant the price of the machine.

as for me
I have the same a gold account based on my japanse adress and a US silver account for demo and trailer that aren't on the japanese market place.
I think the xbox live arcard will do fine even if you cancel your live account, the demo you've downloaded from the us silver account are fully playable when you're logged with the japanese account.

I agree it's really a mess...

I really think the japanese xbox is a good choice, since microsoft release the asian version we can get almost all game compatible (and they're cheap even in import) and you can still have the japanese game (I think N3 is not region free).

Glad to hear you got an Xbox 360! Looking forward to your comments on the UI and the games.

Sorry to hear you're frustrated at being prevented from accessing US content from a Japanese box. We had to do that to comply with our publishers wishes, and also to properly respect regional game rating agencies. Hopefully a US-address silver account work-around will help you get access to the US demos.

My comments? Okay, well,

The basic experience is great. I love turning the machine on and off from the controller, and that they turn each other off.  The 360 will turn off the power in the wireless controllers when it shuts off.  Very cool.

The ability to download demos, trailers and XBox Live Arcade stuff really rocks. Being able to be in control from the controller at all times is awesome too. I can exit any game and get back into the market, lanuch another game or shut it of from the controller. It's great!

My only current suggestion, which is probably obvious, I think the XBox Live Market should use a more html/flash like interface so you can update it constantly with interesting content to point out what's new, hot, cool. As it is it's pretty bland and the only way to find out about stuff is generally to read about it on the PC or through a friend but not directly from my 360.

As an example Rhapsody does a pretty good job of showing me new stuff everytime I log in. They have one window that shows their top 5 promotions (rotating) and they have the most popular list as well showing what's hot as well as a few other things. All of this gives me something to look forward to when I log in.  I'm sure you guys already have plans for something like that.  I supposed another suggestion you might already be doing is you might need 2 interfaces. One for HD and one for old school TV similar the XBMC.  On a TV you can't display as much info as Rhapsody does on a PC but on an HDTV you could certainly get closer.

Oh, one more, Windows Media Connect sucks ass. Everytime it starts it has to scan all the media. I've only got a moderately sized collection of music, maybe 8gig and it takes it like 20~30 minutes to scan through it meaning I can't access any of it until it's finished.  And worse, it takes 35meg of memory and slows down my PC since for the first 20~30 minutes it's constantly accessing the HD to scan all my mp3s   That's very not cool which means I enjoy my 360 less, especially when playing games that were arguably designed for you to play your own music (Uno, Gravity Wars, etc...)

Over all very cool though. The other 2 consoles have lots of catching up to do I think. I'm very curious about Wii's "always on feature". Thinking about that it seems like both PS3 and 360 could have benefitted from a little more brainstorming before they finalized their hardware.

Sorry about the WMC issues... that performance seems totally unacceptable. Hopefully the 360 and WMC teams are working on improving it.

We have lots of experience with "Always on" devices thanks to our WebTV division. I think that the 360 could support an always-on feature if we decided to implement it in the future.

The Wii's always-on feature seems a little bit unnescessary for the Wii, as it doesn't take very long to fill Wii's small amount of persistant storage with data. Always-on features make more sense when you have larger storage. capacity. Perhaps they expect users to add 4 GB memory cards.

True, I don't think Nintendo is expecting to download large amounts of data on Wii. I think they were thinking more like Animal Crossing DS and Nintendogs where while you are not playing things can still happen. Of course arguably that's pointless since you could achieve the same thing the moment you turn the machine on by checking some central server to see if someone sent you something.

To be honest, none of the machines really seem to be designed for media centers (I assume that's what you mean by big content). 20gig? 60gig? not even close. An iPod has 60gig and that's just for someone's music. Where does HD video fit unless the big 3 expect people to delete everything? Hopefully if both systems ever do a good job of being a media center someone will figure out how to connect a $80 300gig HD (current prices) of course given they both hobbled themselves with small HDs they're going to have a hard time becoming media hubs.

Oh, by the way, I saw a 360 running on WMC. Very neat idea but again poor implementation. The friend had probably 20000 songs. Trying to scroll to John Coltrane literally took like 2 minutes

You are kind of screwed. My understanding is you have 3 options

#1) US 360. Will only play US games

#2) Japan 360. Will play Japanese games and Asian games but not US games

#3) Asian 360. Will play Asian games only

There are exceptions since it's up to each company to decide if they want their game to be region locked or region free.

You can generally order the asian version of games pretty reasonablly from http://www.play-asia.com. They are the English version with a Chinese insert so you don't have to worry about language issues and they will run on a Japanese 360.

Basically I would say get a Japanese 360 and then just realize that you'll basically need to buy another one when you go back to the USA.

European / PAL 360 games in Japan?
Hello,

I've just stumbled across this forum via Google. I was wondering if any of you know a shop in Tokyo or an online import shop that would sell *European/Pal* versions of 360 games? This seems to be even harder than finding American titles...

Cheers, Carsten.

Source for games

I just bought a 360 here in Japan because:

a) the setup screen lets you choose English as the system language.

b) Silver account can be set as your home country

c) I got a free 1 month gold account... not sure what happens after that with regards billing.

d) www.play-asia.com has tons of region free (ie play on any xbox 360) or ASIAN region (inc. Japan) games for 40 dollars each... that's a good buy in my book, especially with free shipping.

e) UK TVs will play NTSC as an output, only trouble is the voltage...

--- However, Greg is right. WMC is hopeless. First it takes forever to scan all the music every single time... what's up with that? Second, it sees other folder shares with the dashboard music player. Try going into Media Center, it sees my MCE laptop, but will only look in the My Music folder for music... unless I am doing something seriously wrong!

how'd it work out
Hey Greggman, sorry to bring back an old post but I was wondering how well the Japanese X360 worked out now that you're back in America.  Did you return with the Japanese console?

I'm in a similar predicament where I'm in Japan for another year, want to play this year's hot titles (Bioshock, GTA4, Gears of War, etc), but I want to play them in English.  Did you end up buying the "Asia" region software that was significantly cheaper than the Japanese software?

Any other big problems show up having the Japanese system?

Thanks in advance!

I still have the Japanese 360. While I was in Japan I would order from Play-Asia.com. I didn't have any significant problems. Now that I'm back I'll probably eventually get a US 360 but I'm waiting for a game I really want to play. GTA4 maybe though I'll wait for the reviews as to which is version is better.

Hi Guys
I have an Xbox 360 and I am in UK. I'm trying to get a xbox 360live gold but I cannot because when I try to pay with my credit card it asks an address in  US.
Also in my personal profile there is United States and it's not possible to change it.
Any help please?
Thanks!
