Fingernail Painting Machine
Fingernail Painting Machine I was out with my friend Lulu and we saw this crazy fingernail painting machine so I just had to try it out.

It was a little scary at first because you stick your finger in it. I expected some printer head to come by and spray the pattern on my finger like an ink jet printer and I could imagine it messing up and shredding my finger but of course if that was the case the machine wouldn't be out.

Here is what happens. It was 300yen ($3) for 2 fingers. You pick a pattern

Then you insert your finger into this slot, line up the bottom of your fingernail where a laser is shining a marker and press go.

The machine then locks your finger from the sides, (not hard) you could pull your finger out at any time.

The way it really works is the machine has a jukebox of discs. Each one has one or 2 patterns. It grabs a disc and sets it into the main part of the machine. It then squirts dollops of the correct colored paints on the disc near the inside 3rd of the disc. Then it smears that paint to the outside with an arm spreading the paint to the outside of the disc and across the pattern, once for each color of paint. The paint only sticks to the pattern and the rest spills off the edge of the disc.

Then, once for each color, it takes a vinyl covered pillow, touches it to the disc where one color is, that puts the paint on the pillow. It then squishes the pillow on to your finger applying the paint. Finally it wipes the paint off the pillow and goes back for the next color.

Here are the results

You can pick from 3 sizes of fingernails. You generally would want to print over the sides and then clean off the excess. Then you'd probably want to apply a clear coat over it all.

I don't think this machine is really going to take off. It took 4 or 5 minutes for just 2 fingers and at $3 for 2 that would be $15 and 25 minutes for all your fingers. But it does make me wonder if they had a home version about the size of a Gamecube I wonder if it would be popular.

Japanese and sparetime [ e ]

I start to wonder what japanese people do in their spare time, after seeing every crazy invention. Do they have a life? Do they do stuff like normal people do europe? Like big LAN partys etc...

Most Japanese inventions these days are designed to separate teenagers and young adults from their disposable incomes.

As for free time, the general pattern is work, commuting to/from work, and after-work socials for most people.

Weekends are for doing the laundry, and maybe if you have a car going out for a sunday drive somewhere.

The main social difference betwen Japan and the US at least was that you'll never ever ever invite people over for a party in Japan -- that's what izakayas and other public drinking facilities are for. As a corollary, finding public party spaces in Japanese cities is much easier than in the US.

Social life in Japanese colleges are different, for the primary purpose of college in Japan is to relax and socialize -- joining "circles" aka interest/hobby organizations.

So _where_ is this vending machine? It certainly sounds like it beats Purikura all to heck for disposable income and time wasting.

where [ e ]

that particular machine is in WorldPorters in Yokohama.

as for parties at a home I've been to quite a few.  If fact I just went to an impromptu one last night   It does seem less common in Japan and I used to think that was because the places were small but now I think it's just mostly because of the trains etc, getting you your friend's place is a PITA.

But yes, finding public party spaces is pretty easy.  Where as getting a table for more than 4 in the states is relatively hard, there's probably only one or 2 per restaurant, in Japan most izakayas have lots of places for 8, 12, 20, etc.

Doko de, doko de [ e ]

There's actually another machine in Odaiba.  This is where I first saw one of these machines and on one of the top floors within Joypolis.

As for it's popularity if it ever becomes affordable and gamecube sized, I can attest to.  Been having too much trouble with nail polish lately (it just ever seems to stay on properly...or maybe I just can't hold still for long enough) and salons in Japan are prohibitively expensive (about $30 US & up).  The solution that all girls seem to use here for perfect nails still too unnatural to me-- fake nails, perfect, and available in a abundance of sizes, and colros.  I think at some point I'll give in and try it once though. Just for kicks. ;)

Appearance [ e ]

After browsing the Internet and seeing lots of pictures of japanese people i have come to my conclusion that japanese people look far more younger then there acutal age, for example The love hina concert, The girls singing there dont look older that 15-17 in my eyes, but then i logged on to http://www.animenfo.com/anim
etitle,242,jqhwyg,love_hina.
html
where they display the people who do the voice talents in every anime, look closely at the pictures some of them look like they are below 18 but they are ctually 10 years older. Look at Horie Yui, she dosent look a day older than 17.. she is about 29 today.

use your DIY skillz! [ e ]

way too expensive, and takes the social aspect out of painting nails.* many a fond night was spent getting my nails painted by the gf. now i do both of ours. here's the secret:

1) wash hands thoroughly with warm soapy water
2) 2 coats of clear as a base (wait 5 min between each)
3) two coats of color
*)  when doing a coat, concentrate on getting the brush to evenly distribute the polish, and don't worry about 'staying inside the lines' (as polish washes off of your skin after the first shower)
4) 2 more coats of clear as a top
5) polish with a soft cloth for the 'new car shine' (a dremel works great for this)
6) score with anyone who sees your fly digits

p.s.: guys, if you wanna get a whole new perspective on women, go to  a high end salon and get a french manicure. 30 bucks is cheap for that kind of cultural experience/enlightenment.

nail painting machines EXCITING STUFF! [ e ]

The results available from these machines are incredible. As with all new ideas there will be resistance to change, but just think of the fashion statements you can make! Because of the precision and detail available you could have the Mona Lisa or your dog on your nails, or why not tartan, the posssibilities are endless. I am the distributor of the new machine to soon be available in the UK and Europe and the quality is going to be better than ever. We think that because you should have your nails prepared before application, that the personal touch will still be there, however we will be handling an automated machine (slot feed) as well as a salon version.

Watch this space if you want apiece of the action, it's going to be big!
