Sewing a button
Sewing a button I sewed my first button today based on these instructions.

I know it's probably stupid but some things it didn't cover are

  1. how to attach the thread to the needle. Do I tie it, do I use a special knot?
  2. how to attach the back end of the thread. What do I do, do I just leave so many inches of thread hanging out the back and try not to pull it all the way through? Do I tie it to something else?
  3. How to tie the finishing knot. What do I do? The illustration shows looping it around a couple of times in the back. Is *that* it? Am I supposed to tie something else? If so what kind of knot?

So, it's on, I'm going to go with it the way it is but I don't know if it will stay on. I hope if I did it wrong I don't loose the button.

Pretty simple... [ e ]

1. Thread it thru the needle head, then make a small knot. No particular kind of knot...I just knot it about 3-4 times to make it big enough.
2. Now, pull the thread so that the knot and the end of the thread are equal length. Then pull the end part so it is about 1/4th the length of the knotted end...it will be shorter. The reason for this,...when you pull it thru the hole, you want to make sure that the end/free part of the thread will come thru FIRST before the knotted end. Otherwise, the end will get stuck and it will be hard to pull out.
3. I just loop the needle around some of the stiches and knot it 2-3 times to tie it. Then cut it off...but only short enough so that it doesn't unravel.

Since you are doing a button, I would go over each button hole 2-3 times. That way, it won't be loose again...will stay on really good. Get some good strong thread too...not the really thin kind. If that's all you have, make extra loops to compensate for it. Also, try to use the same holes that were originally used,...makes it easier to keep the button in the correct place so you can slip it thru the button whole easily.

Hope this helps!
